What a complete exam includes
A complete exam is the starting point for new patients and a periodic reset for existing ones. It's more than a glance at your teeth. We check every tooth and existing filling, measure your gums, look at your bite and how your jaw moves, screen the soft tissues of your mouth for anything unusual, and review your medical history and medications, since many affect the mouth.
Digital X-rays fill in what the eye can't see: decay between teeth, infection at the tip of a root, bone loss from gum disease, and problems under old fillings and crowns. Digital sensors use a fraction of the radiation of old film X-rays, and the image appears on the screen in seconds so we can show you exactly what we're seeing.
We also use an intraoral camera, a small wand that takes close-up photos inside your mouth. It's the easiest way to understand a cracked tooth or a worn filling: you see it yourself, on the screen, rather than taking our word for it.

Pricing and coverage
The complete exam is from $178 for uninsured patients, including the digital X-rays we take that day. If a full-mouth series or a panoramic image is needed, we'll tell you beforehand. Exams and X-rays are routinely covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan, ODSP, Ontario Works, Healthy Smiles Ontario and private plans, which we bill directly.
If you've had X-rays at another office recently, ask them to send the images to us and we may not need to retake them.

How often do I need X-rays?
For most adults, bitewing X-rays every one to two years; less often if you have a low cavity risk, more often if things are active. We tailor it to you rather than taking them on a schedule.
Are dental X-rays safe?
Digital dental X-rays deliver a very small dose, and we use a lead apron. We avoid routine X-rays in pregnancy unless there's an urgent reason.
What's the difference between a complete exam and a check-up?
A complete exam is the comprehensive assessment done for new patients or every few years. A check-up, or recall exam, is the shorter review at regular cleaning visits.
Can I get an exam and cleaning on the same day?
Yes, and most people do. Let us know when booking and we'll schedule both.
Will I be pressured into treatment?
No. We'll tell you what we found and what we'd recommend, and prioritise it honestly. Deciding what to do and when is up to you.
